Never Have to Eat Again
It can be pretty annoying sometimes to feed yourself in order to survive. I mean you have to open your mouth, chew, AND swallow.
Rob Rhinehart – a 24-year-old software engineer from Atlanta – is so fed up with it he decided to create a food substitute so he will never have to eat again. He calls the beige odourless substitute Soylent, which is a throwback to the 1973 sci-fi film Soylent Green.
In his blog post called “How I Stopped Eating Food” Rhinehart describes how he had been living on the stuff for 30 days. He’s now gone two months without eating food in the conventional sense and Vice sat down with him to see how it is possible.
WARNING: This diet is untested and potentially dangerous. It hasn’t been studied and Rhinehart is doing his own self-testing without a doctor’s help.
Rhinehart explained to Vice that “[W]e need vitamins and minerals. We need carbs, not bread. Amino acids, not milk. It’s still fine to eat these whenever you want, but not everyone can afford them or has the desire to eat them.”

Despite Soylent looking like it would taste putrid, Rhinehart maintains that it tastes good an contains all of the nutritive components of a balanced diet, but with just a third of the calories. His theory is that by not having to break down food your body saves energy and works more efficiently.
Although it sounds ridiculous Soylent has some potentially remarkable applications, especially in the developing world. Soylent only costs Rhinehart about $50 a month and could be used as a cheap and substitute to ensure that no one dies of starvation.
There is so much interest in Soylent that Rhinehart plans to use Kickstarter to get Soylent to people who are interested.
